In undulating hill country near Tivoli, a favourite weekend excursion from Rome for the famous Villa d'Este gardens and the archaeological wealth of the imperial Villa Adriana, the superb Marco Simone golf club was created less than twenty years ago by fashion designer Laura Biagiotti, whose turreted castello forms a beautiful centrepiece to the layout. The club has already hosted the Italian Open and has an 18 hole course designed by Jim Fazio, complemented by a shorter 9 hole ‘resort course’. Greens and fairways are beautifully kept and enhanced by distant views of the Roman skyline. This is a demanding, hilly course where many golfers will be glad of a buggy, especially in warm weather .
