One of the most prestigious and stylish clubs in Italy, Olgiata is located in a gated private estate to the north of Rome. This haven of expensive tranquillity, established in 1961 by Prince Francesco Ruspoli di Morignano, has hosted two World Cups and the Italian Open on several occasions, most recently in November 2002 when England’s golfing fashion icon Ian Poulter set the course record (61) on the way to victory over Paul Lawrie. CK Cotton’s original design has been modernised by Jim Fazio, but Olgiata's championship (West) course retains the classical character of a spacious, gimmick-free parkland layout in mature woodland that demands precision placement from the tee and may appeal to connoisseurs of golf in Surrey and Berkshire. The terrain is predominantly flat, water comes into play only sparingly and blind shots are few unless you stray seriously from the intended line. Trees and bunkers are the main hazards on a serious course, enjoyable for straight hitters of all standards.
