The oldest golf club in Italy (est. 1889) moved to its present home above Grassina, in pretty hill country to the south of Florence, between the Wars, but the atmosphere in the clubhouse harks back to the age of A Room With A View, when idle members of the expatriate community swung a graceful niblick and introduced polite society to the delights of golf. The culture of the game is understood here, and an excellent lunch is served. The course is hilly (but not too arduous a walk), quite short, tight and decidedly strategic, with few flat lies and small, well protected greens that allow no margin for error. Ugolino is a course where brain prevails over brawn, provided the ball hears the brain's message and obeys.
