Rome is a pilgrimage on every level – cultural, spiritual, gastronomic and .. yes, golfing. What the Romans did for us golfers was create the context for seven of Italy’s finest courses within a thirty mile radius of St Peter’s; no less than three of them feature regularly in the national top ten. All are active members’ clubs where you can be sure of good food, excellent greenkeeping and a civilised round in countrified surroundings of remarkable tranquillity, considering how close to the capital they are, starting with the definitive Roman golfing experience, Acquasanta, which lies only 5 miles from the Colosseum and the same distance from Ciampino airport. It goes without saying that for a holiday combining golf with sightseeing, shopping and good food, or for a mixed group of dedicated and not so keen golfers, all the signposts do indeed point to Rome. The greatest challenge is the traffic, which can make travelling to and from golf stressful and time consuming.

In summer it may be best to base yourself in one of the relaxing pool-equipped hotels in the countryside to the north or south of Rome, and concentrate on the courses near by or on site, making cultural raids on the city centre at the weekend, when the golf courses are busy with club competitions and traffic is relatively light. Evening sorties for dinner in Rome are also easily accomplished, by taxi or public transport. Choose a cooler time of year if you prefer the idea of staying at one of our centrally located hotels, with the bustle and chic of downtown Rome on your doorstep; and commute against the rush hour tide to any of these excellent courses.
