Combine the tried and tested holiday recipe of fine wine, excellent food and stimulating cultural intake with great golf in a landscape that is straight out of a Renaissance painting – all this can be enjoyed from a relaxing base in a comfortable private villa, a quiet rural hotel, on site golf resort accommodation or from a hotel in the heart of one the regions historical towns. As for the courses, Ugolino is the gracious home of Italy’s oldest golf club. Poggio dei Medici is an excellent golf hotel in the hills to the north of Florence with a long, tough course within earshot of Ferrari’s Mugello test circuit. Outside the proud old town of Prato, which is less often visited than it deserves, Arnold Palmer has a created Le Pavoniere, an understated course of subtle hazards and well defended greens on a former Medici hunting estate. All are within half an hour of the centre of Florence. Alternatively head south to Maremma and the Tuscan Coast and enjoy the Mediterranean Sea breezes of the Punta Ala and Argentario courses. Golf is not yet as established in neighboring Umbria but is beginning to develop. To the north of Perugia, in lovely Umbrian hill country, Antognolla is an excellent resort in the making, and already offers golf of high quality. |
