For a civilised golf break with a difference, try Venice. There’s no need to bother with car hire: step on to a vaporetto (water bus) at Marco Polo airport for a magical ride across the lagoon to Venice’s resort island of Lido, which offers hotels great and small, either on the sandy beach or looking across the busy lagoon at the dreaming spires of Venice, a ten minute boat ride away. At the southern tip of the island, Alberoni has one of Italy’s most prestigious golf clubs hidden away in the grounds of its old fortress – a delightful setting for a challenging course that you will want to play more than once. For a more wide-ranging tour, there are good courses on the coast at Lignano and in the foothills of the Dolomites at Asolo, while the holiday island of Albarella, mid-way between Venice and Ravenna, is a tempting alternative base, ideal for an active family holiday in summer or a relaxing golf break in the shoulder season.
